Stuck in traffic. My plan to drive up 6A and merge onto 6 right before the Sagamore was less clever than I thought it was dozens of other cars are doing the same thing and the traffic is just inching forward. I glance up into the wooded hill that rises up behind the road. And there is a smiley face, just floating there among the trees, bidding me to think twice about my plan to throttle the guy in the large black truck who won’t let me merge.

Dont worry, be happy

The second day of work on the Sagamore Bridge was the first night I had to drive on and off-Cape. I arrived home nearly two hours after I left the office. That night this sign should perhaps have been labelled “Speed Fantasy.”

Today, as I drove home from work, it was so foggy that nothing was visible beyond the boundaries of the bridge.

When I was little, the Sagamore Bridge was a magical structure. Spanning the canal, it was the clear dividing line between the land of Home and School, and the kingdom of Fun and Vacation. These days, I barely notice the bridge; many days, I get so absorbed in my thoughts as I drive that I find myself, for a moment, unsure whether I am on the Cape or the mainland.

This morning though, as I headed to work a little late, I was struck by the way the the sunlight hit the metal and the way that the structure formed an irregular grid against the cloudless blue sky.
